Overview of U-Values & Thermal Bridging
To formally calculate your properties Energy Rating (SAP), the fabric U-values must be calculated. These calculations are used to quantify the heat transfer through a thermal element of a building (floors, walls, glass and roofs). The amount of heat transfer depends on the thickness and thermal conductivity of each building material in a given cross-section of the thermal envelope.
Why do I need these calculations?
Part L has recently changed with a greater emphasis of compliance leaning towards a fabric first approach. So as an industry we can't keep throwing technology solutions to gain a pass. However standard U-values in the industry have got better as below demonstrates:
- External Walls - 0.18 W/m2K
- Floor - 0.13 W/m2K
- Party Walls - 0.00 W/m2K
- Roof - 0.13 W/m2K
- Windows - 1.40 W/m2K
- Doors (solid) - 1.00 W/m2K
This does highlight how important it is to work these out officially. More importantly is the need to consider Thermal Bridging as well for all the interconnecting junctions. By having these standard details calculated, which may only be for a standard house builder a one-off investment, you will see a significant change to your overall SAP compliance.
